    Keep it Moving🧘‍♂️Free Livestream Yoga @5pana

    Bummed at the irony that the Health/Wellness MAAP event was cancelled the same week quarantines began? So am I, but that doesn't mean we can't find creative opportunities to find connection to mind, body and spirit without a lot of equipment in the comfort of home. Maybe you never realized you could dedicate time for yoga at home; now you've at least thought about it, if not already doing it.

    Beginning Friday, March 27 1030AM EST I will be offering a daily Livestream Yoga session for All-levels (young, old, beginner, advanced) on my INSTAGRAM @5pana. So whether its your first ever experience or your 10,000th yoga session, join me as we get more than a stretch! You'll find this daily session to be (at the very least) a chance to pause from the morning inner-dialogue of "what should I do today?" and connect with self and others starting their day with intention. So, lets keep it moving!

    How are you staying healthy, busy, and sane?

    I am curious to know how everyone is staying healthy and positive. I personally am still going into work. I work full time at a company that sell PPE and industrial supplies for factories and other businesses. Since my part time business of massage therapy is inactive, I have a lot more free time. To occupy the time I do a few things.

    1) Rest - The world is really crazy right now. While it is important to stay connected, it can also produce a lot of anxiety. Now more than ever it is important to take care of yourself. I find comfort and peace by sleeping, stretching, and meditation. You can turn inward and focus on you. There are lots of free classes for meditation and stretching. You can find stretching and guided meditation routines on Check out the social media pages for local yoga and fitness studios. They are have created live stream sessions to help you. 

    2) Work Out - Fitness is a big part of my life. My fitness journey started back in college. Lets unpack two things here. First thing is selfish. I personally don't have any issues working out at home other than the lack of gains bro. Knowing that I'm going to lose muscle and progress is a hard protein shake to swallow. I have a few fitness bands and a 25 lb kettle bell. There are no weights anywhere. More importantly, I don't really have the cash to spend on home gym. As someone who can bench press his own body weight and squat nearly twice that amount, this really SUCKS!!! SO... I am grateful that I am healthy, and so are my family and friends. I realize that this is just ego and vanity. I take a deep breath and I let it go. This lock down will pass. The gyms will reopen. Weights will not be a scarce product in the market place. The second thing is wellness. After letting go of my ego, I realize how important it is to stay active. My brain is accustomed to working out. Staying physically active reduces my anxiety. That is so important right now. Going for walks/ hikes in my neighborhood has been a truly joyful experience. Atlanta is full of parks, some of which are actual neighborhoods, and many are connected by the PATH trails. Exploring my local area by foot has been an amazing experience. I'm good at making myself go for a run or do a home workout. If you are not then I suggest social media. Lots of trainers and local gyms have live streams and work plans for you. I promise you will not need weights.

    3) Educate Myself - I'm a Virgo and I love to learn. It's truly a pass time. If you are stuck at home with nothing to do then this is a good time to expand your knowledge. Use this isolation as an opportunity to sharpen your skill set. No cost is required. You may even get a degree or certificate out of it. There are lots of free courses online from actual accredited universities and colleges.

    4) Check on Family and Friends - I am a very singular person. I don't need a lot of social activity. I am an introvert by nature. I love being at home. If I don't receive a phone call or text message all day, I am not bothered by it at all. However, I secretly need people. I need to hear someone complain. I need someone to make me laugh. I need someone to care. Everyone is struggling in some way right now. You may also be struggling and not know it. Call someone or send them a text message. Ask them if they are ok. Tell them you were just thinking about them. Invite them to facetime or zoom. Listen, laugh, share, or even cry together. We are all human. We are all social creatures. We need each other. 

    5) Check on Clients - I love doing massage because it allows me to help and connect with people in a way that I cannot in regular conversation. I try to check in on some of my regular clients weekly. Why? Two reasons. First, business is all about relationships. Good relationships translates to good business.  Second, and most importantly, these people are my friends and I miss them. I see them more than my family at this point in my life. When this is all over, I hope to give them all the best massage I have ever given them.  I care about them and they care about me too.

    Nate, thank you so much for sharing your story here!

    I have been struggling on the wellness side of this lockdown as well. My struggle is two-fold: lack of exercise and unhealthy eating. 

    I have a major sweet tooth and baking helps calm me, so I have been baking a very large number of cookies. I have made 5 batches since lockdown started. However, there are only two people in my house, and I can't easily bring the extras into the office to share. This is leading to some gains around my middle that I am not at all thrilled about. I am practicing things I have learned in therapy over the last year and half to reframe my unhealthy eating not as something I should be punished for, but as something I am doing to cope with a stressful situation. It's still not good for me in the long run, but in moderation it is helping me get through this crisis.

    On the exercise front, my office building had just this year opened a new gym that was free to tenants! I was in the groove of working out most mornings before work and it was awesome. Working out from home isn't the same. As you mentioned Nate, I have none of the equipment and not the funds to purchase it. Instead, I've been turning to yoga, along with hundreds of other people, apparently. I've been trying very hard to keep up a daily yoga and meditation routine for both my physical and mental health. Yoga is exercise, but it's also a useful coping tool in times of stress.

    I think the key is balance, but I may be working towards that for the rest of my life.
